This black stone kali maa stands tall in polished dark stone, a severed head hanging from her lower right hand while a curved blade rises in the upper right, partly hidden behind a large leaf-shaped arch. She is shown standing with four arms, the upper two raised, and the lower left hand open and empty. In tradition, Kali is the fierce form of the Mother, honoured as the one who ends fear and ignorance.
Kali Maa Murti, Cut From Dark Stone
Our karigars shape each piece by hand, first roughing out the block, then cutting the finer parts with small chisels before polishing the stone until it holds a smooth, deep black finish. A tall pointed crown carries a carved pattern, and the arch behind her has a carved rim. Necklaces, armlets, bangles and anklets are cut in clear relief, and a short pleated skirt sits under a carved waist band. One foot rests on a second figure lying on his back on the stepped base, which is worth a slow look, since the carved edge of that base is easy to overlook. At 3 feet, the murti has real presence in a room. A soft dry cloth is all it needs for dusting, and strong chemical cleaners are best kept away from the polish. Under the glow of a diya, the polished surface picks up soft highlights along the arms and crown.
Why We Chose This Piece
At Janijatra, we pick each idol by looking closely at the carving, the finish and the balance of the whole figure. If you would like a different size or a piece to sit beside this one, our karigars can make it to your measure. Message us with any question.
The Art of Handcrafted Heritage
Every piece offered at Janijatra is an original work of art, handcrafted by skilled artisans who carry forward Odisha's centuries-old traditions of Pattachitra and Tala Patra Chitra. Each stroke is made by hand, making every creation distinct, soulful, and impossible to replicate exactly.
Made Exclusively for You
The artwork displayed in the image is a one-of-a-kind handcrafted piece. As our creations are individually made, the exact piece shown may already be sold or may not be currently available. Should you place an order, a new piece will be specially handcrafted for you with the same care and detail.
Being entirely handmade, slight variations in colour, fine detailing, or finish may appear when compared to the original image. These subtle differences are not flaws — they are the signature of authentic, handcrafted art, and a mark of the human touch behind every piece.
Thoughtful Packaging & Safe Delivery
We understand that each artwork is precious. Every piece is carefully packed using protective materials to ensure it reaches you in pristine condition. Fragile creations are given special attention, with secure wrapping and reinforced packaging designed to safeguard the artwork throughout its journey to your doorstep.
Caring for Your Artwork
To preserve the beauty of your piece for years to come, a few simple steps go a long way. For paintings on cloth and palm leaf, keep your artwork away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture, as these may affect the natural colours over time. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid using water or chemical cleaners. For traditional palm leaf (Tala Patra) works, store in a dry environment to maintain the integrity of the leaf.
Stone artworks are durable by nature and can be placed both indoors and outdoors, making them a beautiful addition to gardens, balconies, and open spaces as well as interior settings.
