Our sandstone saraswati murti handcrafted by karigars draws the eye first with its tall tiered crown, topped by a round flat disc, and a carved arch-shaped halo with a scalloped edge behind the head. The goddess sits calmly with her right leg folded across the seat, holding a decorated veena across her body, a looped string of beads in her raised lower right hand, and a worn object in the upper right hand. In tradition, Saraswati is known as the goddess of learning, music and the arts.
Saraswati Murti in Light Tan Sandstone
Our karigars shape each piece by hand from a single block of sandstone, chiselling the form first and then cutting the finer lines with smaller tools. The stone keeps one even light tan colour, and the carved texture stays visible on every surface. Look closely at the necklaces, armlets, bangles and anklets, all cut in relief, and at the scrollwork running along the neck and body of the veena. The face is calm, with downcast eyes. At 4 Feet tall, the piece has a quiet presence beside a study shelf, a reading corner or a home mandir. Wipe it with a dry cloth now and then to keep the carving clear. Under the soft light of a diya, the relief work throws small shadows and the stone looks warmer.
One detail is easy to miss: a small bird is carved at the lower right of the base, beside the lotus-petal seat where her foot rests.
Chosen With Care at Janijatra
At Janijatra we look closely at the carving, the finish and the proportions before a piece is listed. If you would like this Saraswati in another size, or a second piece to stand beside it, our karigars can make it to your measure. Message us with any question.
The Art of Handcrafted Heritage
Every piece offered at Janijatra is an original work of art, handcrafted by skilled artisans who carry forward Odisha's centuries-old traditions of Pattachitra and Tala Patra Chitra. Each stroke is made by hand, making every creation distinct, soulful, and impossible to replicate exactly.
Made Exclusively for You
The artwork displayed in the image is a one-of-a-kind handcrafted piece. As our creations are individually made, the exact piece shown may already be sold or may not be currently available. Should you place an order, a new piece will be specially handcrafted for you with the same care and detail.
Being entirely handmade, slight variations in colour, fine detailing, or finish may appear when compared to the original image. These subtle differences are not flaws — they are the signature of authentic, handcrafted art, and a mark of the human touch behind every piece.
Thoughtful Packaging & Safe Delivery
We understand that each artwork is precious. Every piece is carefully packed using protective materials to ensure it reaches you in pristine condition. Fragile creations are given special attention, with secure wrapping and reinforced packaging designed to safeguard the artwork throughout its journey to your doorstep.
Caring for Your Artwork
To preserve the beauty of your piece for years to come, a few simple steps go a long way. For paintings on cloth and palm leaf, keep your artwork away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture, as these may affect the natural colours over time. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid using water or chemical cleaners. For traditional palm leaf (Tala Patra) works, store in a dry environment to maintain the integrity of the leaf.
Stone artworks are durable by nature and can be placed both indoors and outdoors, making them a beautiful addition to gardens, balconies, and open spaces as well as interior settings.
