This black stone nandi idol shows Nandi the bull lying down with his legs folded beneath him and his head turned slightly to one side, all in glossy polished black stone. He is a figure at rest, so there is no mudra of the hands and nothing is held. In tradition, Nandi is the faithful vahana of Shiva and the first guardian at the temple door, a quiet picture of patient devotion.
Nandi, Lying Down in Polished Black Stone
Our karigars carve this piece from a single block of black stone, shaping the body first, then cutting the finer parts with small chisels before rubbing the surface smooth until it shines. The two ears stand upright and pointed, with two short horns between them. A decorated band with a small pattern runs across the forehead, and another band circles the muzzle. Layered necklaces of round, bead-like and circular carved patterns rest around the neck, with a bell hanging at the front. Over the back lies a carved cloth with a flower motif at its side and patterned edges. The detail you may miss is the thin carved border along the edge of the flat rectangular base. The idol stands 2.5 feet tall and suits a temple room or a home shrine. Wipe it with a dry soft cloth to keep the gloss. Set under a diya, the dark stone catches the flame in soft streaks of light.
Why We Picked This Nandi
At Janijatra we look closely at the carving and the polish before we pick each piece. If you would like a different size or a matching idol to stand beside it, our karigars can make one to your measure. Message us with any question.
The Art of Handcrafted Heritage
Every piece offered at Janijatra is an original work of art, handcrafted by skilled artisans who carry forward Odisha's centuries-old traditions of Pattachitra and Tala Patra Chitra. Each stroke is made by hand, making every creation distinct, soulful, and impossible to replicate exactly.
Made Exclusively for You
The artwork displayed in the image is a one-of-a-kind handcrafted piece. As our creations are individually made, the exact piece shown may already be sold or may not be currently available. Should you place an order, a new piece will be specially handcrafted for you with the same care and detail.
Being entirely handmade, slight variations in colour, fine detailing, or finish may appear when compared to the original image. These subtle differences are not flaws — they are the signature of authentic, handcrafted art, and a mark of the human touch behind every piece.
Thoughtful Packaging & Safe Delivery
We understand that each artwork is precious. Every piece is carefully packed using protective materials to ensure it reaches you in pristine condition. Fragile creations are given special attention, with secure wrapping and reinforced packaging designed to safeguard the artwork throughout its journey to your doorstep.
Caring for Your Artwork
To preserve the beauty of your piece for years to come, a few simple steps go a long way. For paintings on cloth and palm leaf, keep your artwork away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture, as these may affect the natural colours over time. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid using water or chemical cleaners. For traditional palm leaf (Tala Patra) works, store in a dry environment to maintain the integrity of the leaf.
Stone artworks are durable by nature and can be placed both indoors and outdoors, making them a beautiful addition to gardens, balconies, and open spaces as well as interior settings.
