This black stone mahishasura mardini idol draws the eye first with a long trident held in the upper left hand and running down in one straight diagonal to the base. The goddess stands upright, with about eight arms spread out behind her like a fan. A bow is held in one right hand and a mace-like object in one left hand. In tradition, Mahishasura Mardini is the form of Durga who ended the buffalo demon, and she is honoured as the power that stands against wrong.

Mahishasura Mardini From Crown to Base

She wears a tall pointed crown with a round halo disc behind the head. Necklaces, armlets, bangles and a decorated belt are carved on the body, and the flowing drapery of the lower garment carries small star-like motifs. At her lower left foot rests the lion, and at the lower right sits a smaller male figure with a weapon in his hand. Look at the layered oval base too, where fine carved line patterns run around the edge. Our karigars shape this piece from dark black stone, carving each ornament by hand before polishing the surface to a smooth, deep finish. The idol stands 60 inch tall, so it needs a firm base or a low platform. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth to keep the polish clear. In a hall or a prayer room, the polished stone catches the glow of a diya along the arms and crown.

The Art of Handcrafted Heritage

Every piece offered at Janijatra is an original work of art, handcrafted by skilled artisans who carry forward Odisha's centuries-old traditions of Pattachitra and Tala Patra Chitra. Each stroke is made by hand, making every creation distinct, soulful, and impossible to replicate exactly.

Made Exclusively for You

The artwork displayed in the image is a one-of-a-kind handcrafted piece. As our creations are individually made, the exact piece shown may already be sold or may not be currently available. Should you place an order, a new piece will be specially handcrafted for you with the same care and detail.

Being entirely handmade, slight variations in colour, fine detailing, or finish may appear when compared to the original image. These subtle differences are not flaws — they are the signature of authentic, handcrafted art, and a mark of the human touch behind every piece.

Thoughtful Packaging & Safe Delivery

We understand that each artwork is precious. Every piece is carefully packed using protective materials to ensure it reaches you in pristine condition. Fragile creations are given special attention, with secure wrapping and reinforced packaging designed to safeguard the artwork throughout its journey to your doorstep.

Caring for Your Artwork

To preserve the beauty of your piece for years to come, a few simple steps go a long way. For paintings on cloth and palm leaf, keep your artwork away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture, as these may affect the natural colours over time. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid using water or chemical cleaners. For traditional palm leaf (Tala Patra) works, store in a dry environment to maintain the integrity of the leaf.

Stone artworks are durable by nature and can be placed both indoors and outdoors, making them a beautiful addition to gardens, balconies, and open spaces as well as interior settings.
