This ganesh idol black stone piece, 48 inch tall, shows Ganesha in dark polished stone, his long trunk curling to the left under a tall tiered crown with a domed top. He stands with four arms: the lower right hand holds a rounded, textured ball-like sweet, the two upper hands hold small pointed buds, and the lower left hand is raised open with the palm facing out in a blessing. In tradition, Ganesha is known as the remover of obstacles, and he is the first deity invited before any new beginning.

Standing Ganesha in Black Stone

Our karigars shape this idol from a single block of black stone, first roughing out the form and then cutting each line by hand with fine chisels. Behind the head and shoulders rises a large leaf-like halo, and a carved line pattern runs down the length of the trunk. The ears carry fine carved lines, and curls of hair sit in ridges beneath the crown. Banded bracelets circle the upper arms, and a carved necklace with ornament details spreads across the chest. Lighter grey carved lines stand out against the glossy black, so the detail reads clearly even from across the room. One small thing is easy to miss: the pointed bud shape is repeated in both upper hands, like a matched pair. At 48 inch, it fills an entrance hall or prayer room well. A gentle pass with a clean, dry cotton cloth every few days is all the polish needs to stay glossy. Under the light of a diya, the grey lines glow softly against the dark stone.
