This pattachitra dashavatara painting handcrafted in Odisha lays out ten framed panels in two rows of five, and the eye goes first to the orange borders with their dotted edges. Nearly every figure stands in a firm upright pose against a pale cream ground. In the first panel the multi-armed figure holds a conch and a mace in the hands we can see. Another panel shows a blue figure with an open umbrella raised overhead and a small pot in the other hand. In tradition, the Dashavatara tells of the ten forms Vishnu took to protect the world.

Our karigars paint this in the Odisha pattachitra way, using bright flat colours (yellow, blue, pink, orange, green) and fine black outlines drawn by hand. The first panel shows a figure with a fish body below the waist in blue water, and the second shows a figure resting on a green turtle. Animal-headed figures, one with a boar-like face, fill the next two panels. The ninth figure sits cross-legged on a pink lotus with one hand raised in an open-palm gesture, and the tenth rides a pink-white horse with a raised sword or stick. Teal and orange drapes hang across the top of each panel like a small stage curtain. A wide black outer border with yellow-and-white ovals and white flowers, plus a pink inner band, frames the whole work. Many shoppers miss the sixth panel, where a club is raised in one hand and a bow is held in another. Keep it dry and dust it with a soft cloth. On a wall in a hallway or prayer corner, the colours stay bright even in soft light.
