This handcrafted sacred nandi idol shows a bull lying down with legs folded beneath him and his head turned to the left, a bell hanging at his neck. Nandi has no hands to hold anything, so the whole figure rests in quiet waiting. In tradition, Nandi is the devoted vehicle of Shiva and the keeper of his gate, and he is placed facing the shrine as a sign of patient devotion.

Nandi in Polished Black Stone

Our karigars carve each Nandi from a single block of dark stone, shaping the hump, the two short pointed horns and the folded legs before polishing the surface to a glossy shine. Beaded and carved bands wrap around the neck and run across the back, and a flower-shaped ornament sits near the tail. The bull rests on a flat, thin black rectangular base. The detail many shoppers miss is the hump on the shoulders, carved in soft rounded lines that give the body its weight. At 12 inches, it suits a shelf, a side table or a spot beside a Shiva idol. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth to keep the shine. Under the glow of a diya, the polished stone picks up small points of light along the beaded bands.

A Closing Word From Janijatra

At Janijatra we pick each piece for the cleanness of its carving and the calm of its form. If you would like a different size, or a second piece to sit beside this one, our karigars are happy to make it to order. Send us a message with any question you have.

The Art of Handcrafted Heritage

Every piece offered at Janijatra is an original work of art, handcrafted by skilled artisans who carry forward Odisha's centuries-old traditions of Pattachitra and Tala Patra Chitra. Each stroke is made by hand, making every creation distinct, soulful, and impossible to replicate exactly.

Made Exclusively for You

The artwork displayed in the image is a one-of-a-kind handcrafted piece. As our creations are individually made, the exact piece shown may already be sold or may not be currently available. Should you place an order, a new piece will be specially handcrafted for you with the same care and detail.

Being entirely handmade, slight variations in colour, fine detailing, or finish may appear when compared to the original image. These subtle differences are not flaws — they are the signature of authentic, handcrafted art, and a mark of the human touch behind every piece.

Thoughtful Packaging & Safe Delivery

We understand that each artwork is precious. Every piece is carefully packed using protective materials to ensure it reaches you in pristine condition. Fragile creations are given special attention, with secure wrapping and reinforced packaging designed to safeguard the artwork throughout its journey to your doorstep.

Caring for Your Artwork

To preserve the beauty of your piece for years to come, a few simple steps go a long way. For paintings on cloth and palm leaf, keep your artwork away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture, as these may affect the natural colours over time. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid using water or chemical cleaners. For traditional palm leaf (Tala Patra) works, store in a dry environment to maintain the integrity of the leaf.

Stone artworks are durable by nature and can be placed both indoors and outdoors, making them a beautiful addition to gardens, balconies, and open spaces as well as interior settings.
